Virtual Interview Tips

An employer has reached out and asked to schedule an interview. There’s just one catch: it’s virtual.

For prospective employees, trying to get a job via video conferencing software, such as Skype, Zoom, Indeed, etc. can feel a bit daunting. Here are six virtual interview tips to reduce the stress and help you get the job.

6 Virtual Interview Tips

1. Dress Presentable & Professional.

Even though it is a virtual interview, you still want to make a good first impression. Dress as you would for an in-person interview. Pro tip: Even if the position you interview does not require business attire, you should still present yourself in a business casual manner.

2. Find a Quiet Place for Your Interview.

Try to find a room with good lighting and minimal distractions. Ideally, you should place yourself blank wall to guarantee you’re the focal point of the conversation. Also, make sure you clean up your background before the interview begins.

3. Test Your Microphone & Web Cam.

Just like an in-person interview, you should arrive early to your virtual interview. Log-on to your device at least 10 minutes before your interview to make sure you have a quality internet connection and your microphone and web cam are functioning properly.

4. Be Prepared.

It is important to come to any interview prepared. Research the company ahead of time and write down notes for easy reference. You should also print out a copy of your resume, so that you can easily reference back to it. Also, be ready to ask your interviewer some questions. For example, “What does a typical day in the life of this role look like?” and “Can you walk me through the next steps of the hiring process?”

5. Speak Calmly & Clearly.

Sound systems are not always perfect. Try not to rush your words and avoid mumbling. You should practice interviewing with a friend or family member. This will help you prepare and also calm your nerves.

6. Maintain Eye Contact.

During your interview, try to remember to look at the camera rather than down at the screen/monitor. In addition to being expressive when answering questions, keeping eye contact will show your interviewer that you are invested in the conversation and job opportunity.

In the end, the key to a successful virtual interview is to be YOURSELF! As long as you are properly prepared, there is no need to stress over virtual interviews.
